Another Solution For Droopy Eyelids

This article was taken from a The MG FLASH November 1997 No.4 and from AMPS: MGA NEWS, Southfield, Michigan

As an ocular Myasthenia Gravis patient, I often experience eyelid weakness and the medical profession often suggests the use of eyelid crutches and tapes. However, these aids may cause blinking difficulties, therefore, I searched for other solutions and have come up with another idea. For people, like myself, who need easy, short-term, aesthetically pleasing solutions, I would like to propose the use of transport tape to support the eyelid muscle weakness experienced by ocular Myasthenia Gravis patients. This tape has worked well for me because it stretches as it holds and gives the lower portion of one's eyelid solid support.

For years, Asian women have successfully used a special eyelid tape to enhance their appearance. This tape was originally created for cosmetic purposes -- to transform the "almond shaped eyes into larger, Eurocentric eyes. This eyelid tape is pre-shaped, transpore tape manufactured by Johnson & Johnson (but it may be difficult to find in the States --- I forgot mine from Taiwan).* Upon its application, individuals with a slight double crease on the eyelid (most Asians) will have a full double crease appearance. Individuals who already have the full double crease characteristic (Caucasians, African Americans, Native American and Hispanics) will experience extra support on their upper eyelid muscles resulting in larger eyes.

There are no known side effects of the transpore eyelid tape, unless one is allergic to the ingredients used to produce the tape. For ocular Myasthenia Gravis patients, the tape is only a short term 'treatment'. It can only support the eyelid muscles for several houres before the patient experiences fatigue again.

Nevertheless, the eye tape is an extremely useful tool for patients whose only symptom of Myasthenia Gravis is eyelid muscle weakness. This tape can alleviate the symptom without the patient taking extra medication. My doctor, John Wald, MD of the University of Michigan Medical Center, though the eyelid tape should be safe and worth a try. As always, check with your own doctor before trying something new.

*Note: Clear plastic first aid tape by 3M can be substituted; the only difference is that it is not pre-cut.

Features of the tape:

  • freedom to blink

  • allows the skin to breath

  • hypoallergenic

  • available in 3 sizes

  • waterproof

  • invisible upon application

  • may apply eye makeup over it
